For as far back in time as anyone can find, people have been catching and eating fish in an effort to sustain a healthy life. So, whether you enjoy the sport of fishing (like our ancestors) or not, here are four major reasons why including this one food in your diet is extremely beneficial to your health:
- It is good for your heart. Fish that contains omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon, tuna, and herring; basically, most fish contain it with saltwater options generally having more than freshwater fish) keep your heart healthy and strong. One of the ways it does this is via lowering any inflammation occurring in your body that may do harm to your blood vessels. It also reduces your chances of suffering from a fatal heart attack.
- It lowers your cholesterol levels. If you have high cholesterol already or are just intent on making sure you never get it, fish is one food that will help you either way. It lowers your triglyceride levels, allowing your blood to easily carry nutrients to all parts of your body.
- It is beneficial for arthritis. Fish and fish oil caplets have been connected with easier and more pain free movement for people that suffer from the pains and achiness commonly associated with arthritis and related conditions.
- It improves your immunity. When you have an immune system that is strong, you’re able to fight off most any illnesses and diseases without ever letting them take hold. This means less time laid up in bed and more time actually living your life.
Ideally, you’ll want to eat a serving of fish (approximately 3 ounces in size) at least twice a week. You can grill it, bake it or sauté it in a little bit of olive oil and serve it as a main dish or put it atop a bed of leafy greens for an added health punch.
