Pros and Cons of High Protein Diets

Some health experts believe that a high protein diet is the best when it comes to health and wellness. However, before deciding to commit to any type of eating program, it is always best to know exactly what to expect. To help with that, here are some pros and cons of eating a primarily protein menu.

Pros

One of the most noticeable pros when it comes to high protein diets is that you will likely drop a few pounds when you first make the switch. This is largely due to a loss of water (not fat) from no longer eating many carbs.

High protein diets also tend to give you energy since you’re not being dragged down by a lot of carb heavy foods, while helping you feel fuller at the same time. Add that to the lower cholesterol levels that they help promote and it is easy to see why this particular diet program is favored by health experts everywhere.

Cons

With all of the pros of high protein diets, you may wonder if there are any cons to eating this way. Unfortunately, there is. For instance, there is the fact that eating fewer carbs also generally means that you’re cutting out a lot of healthy foods, like fruit and vegetables. This lowers the amount of vitamins, minerals, and fiber that you are taking in, which could ultimately lead to lower levels of health.

Additionally, a lot of animal proteins contain higher amounts of saturated fat which, despite recent news that they may not be bad for you, they aren’t exactly be good for you either, and more studies are needed on the topic. Plus, eating high protein can also increase your body odor (due to the ketones), so that is a con as well.

There you have it, the pros and cons of high protein diets. What do you think? Do you like them or not? Place your comments below!
