Which Has More Protein: Fish or Meat?

Protein offers many benefits, especially for people who live an active lifestyle. It not only supplies a great deal of energy, but it also provides the nutrients that muscles need to grow bigger and stronger. Additionally, it helps squelch hunger, satisfying your tummy for longer periods of time, which means an easier time losing weight or maintaining a loss in the process.

With these types of advantages, you may be striving to eat more protein in your daily diet. So, which do you think is higher in this extremely beneficial macronutrient: fish or meat? Now, think about your answer for a minute and see if you can guess the right one.

If you answered fish, sorry to say that you are wrong. But you are also wrong if you answered meat. Wait…what? The reality is that they have about the same amount of protein, which means that fish and meat are both great additions to a healthy, protein-rich diet.

For example, a 3-ounce ground beef patty that is 85 percent lean has roughly 22 grams of protein, whereas the same sized serving of cooked salmon has 21 grams. No matter which one you eat, you will be providing your body with top quality protein necessary for building more muscle.

The one area that fish inches ahead of meat is the fact that its fat has been found to be healthier for your body. This means lower cholesterol levels and a reduced risk of heart disease, which ultimately results in better cardiovascular health.

On the flip side, meat is generally higher in iron, which is essential to carrying oxygen from your heart to your cells. So, eating meat is a great way to ensure that you enjoy higher levels of cellular health, which is critical as well.

In the end, adding both of these food groups to your diet is a great way to get the protein that your body needs.
