5 Exercise to Help You Stay Active With Mesothelioma

A diagnosis of mesothelioma comes with a host of physical and emotional challenges; fatigue, problems breathing, limited mobility, to name a few. Yet, you can benefit from even a moderate amount of exercise. When exercise is modified to your restrictions, it can improve mobility, circulation, build muscle strength, and even improve lung function. Here are five activities that you can incorporate into your health plan while navigating a diagnosis of mesothelioma.

  1. Aerobic Activity for a Healthy Heart and Lungs

Aerobic activity can seem difficult, especially when you have lung issues. Light to moderate types of aerobic activity like stationary biking can work without overexerting your body, and all while conditioning your heart and lungs.

Aerobic activity will improve your body’s oxygen delivery system and lower your potential for blood clots which are particularly dangerous for mesothelioma patient treatments in treatment. Always start slow (increments of two to 10 minutes per day), and make sure your physician is on board with your increasing activity.

  1. Walking: A Simple, Effective Solution

For some diagnosed with mesothelioma, walking can be less difficult and safer to perform than other exercise options. Whether you walk outside or inside will depend upon where you are located and your energy levels.

If you can get in a short walk each day, you’ll improve your stiffness, movement in your joints, and improve your lung function. Walking is also a great way to enhance your mood, lessen depression, and reduce anxiety. If all you can do is walk for a few minutes at a time before getting too fatigued, don’t be afraid to break the walking into smaller pieces throughout the day.

  1. Yoga: Breath and Movement

Yoga is a combination of gentle stretching, controlled breathing, and awareness, all of these are useful for a person with mesothelioma. The breathing techniques of yoga can be particularly helpful in aiding lung capacity and dealing with shortness of breath whereas the postures can help maintain flexibility and coordination.

Many cancer patients find that yoga reduces stress and decreases pain. If you are looking for Florida mesothelioma treatment, some yoga classes in Florida are specifically tailored for cancer patients.

  1. Cycling: Building Your Endurance

If your energy level permits, cycling can be a great form of cardiovascular fitness while putting very little stress on the joints. Cycling promotes leg strength, posture, and coordination. The great thing about cycling is that you have greater control over pace and resistance, allowing you to adapt your workout, based on how you feel on the day. Make sure you appropriately hydrate and do not exceed your limits. In general, stationary bikes with back support may be the best for individuals with weak strength and balance.

  1. Stretching: Keeping the Muscles and Joints Loose

Stretching is an essential part of your routine, especially for patients diagnosed with mesothelioma who are experiencing stiffness due to not moving and fatigue due to the effects of treatment.

Light stretching can maintain elasticity of the muscle tissue, relieve tension in muscles and help you circulate blood and oxygen. Stretching will also prevent muscle atrophy which can occur when you are in reduced levels of activity in your illness.

When possible you will want to stretch every major muscle group at least two to three times a week and after a walk. You can do simple movements like shoulder rolls, neck rotates and ankle circles; you may be surprised how much of a difference those can make.

Endnote

Exercise for mesothelioma is about consistent moderate activity and what works for you. The following five exercises will allow you to stay active, cope with symptoms, and support your physical and mental health. Whatever exercise you choose, always consult with your doctor or physiotherapist, as they understand your medical history and current level of activity.
