Excessive Sweating During Exercise: Good or Bad?

Excessive Sweating During Exercise: Good or Bad? - Fitness Health

Do you sweat buckets of water when you’re engaged in exercise? If so, this may make you wonder whether all of that perspiration is good for you or harmful to your health. After all, if you’re working out to get in better shape, the last thing you want to do is hurt yourself in the process, so knowing this type of information can help you increase your health in a way that is safer and better for you.

One thing to realize from the start is that some people naturally sweat more than others. So, just because you see people in the gym who are barely perspiring, that doesn’t mean that your drenched shirt and gym shorts is a sign of an issue. It could just be that you’re a heavier sweater when you exercise.

Plus, if you are overweight at all, you might also notice that the water rings around your armpits are larger than others in the gym. Again, this is completely normal and nothing to worry about. The more you get into shape, the more it will take to get you to work up a sweat, so that is one positive sign that you’re making progress.

On the other hand, there are some instances in which excessive sweating is actually a sign of an underlying medical condition. For example, people with thyroid issues and diabetes will often sweat more. Your body also increases the amount of sweat it releases if you’re fighting off some type of infection or illness.

Because there is no clear cut answer here, the best thing you can do is see a doctor if you’re concerned about the amount you sweat during exercise. At least then you can rule out these other factors and know whether your excessive sweating is truly excessive for you.
