Which Foods are Strong Antioxidants?

Food is Strong Antioxidants

Antioxidants are those substances that prevent oxidation in our body. Oxidation may lead to the damaging of vital cells, thus antioxidants inhibit this from happening. There are many antioxidants available out there, but they can be sorted into strong, or weak categories.

So, if you want to know about the strongest antioxidants available, stick on with this article.

Tomato

The red color pigment in tomato contains a strong antioxidant, lycopene. It has the ability to fight with a number of diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, and cancer types. This is because lycopene can effectively neutralize free radicals due to its unique molecular structure. Moreover, if your intake of tomato is high, your body will obtain a higher amount of lycopene. Thus, it can offer greater protection against these diseases.

Pomegranates

Pomegranates consist of ellagic acid that is a strong antioxidant. It has the ability to stop hydroxyl free radicals from causing a chain reaction that can damage cells. Ellagic acid can prevent the development of certain types of cancer cells, like prostate cancer. Also, it can keep the human body safe from heart diseases.

Green tea

Green tea has a high level of polyphenols, an antioxidant. Increased consumption of polyphenol leads to lesser damage caused by oxidation in vital biomolecules. Specifically, polyphenol help in protecting DNA, the molecule of inheritance, from potential oxidative damage. Therefore, it is important that this antioxidant is there in our daily diet.

Orange

Oranges are the richest source of Vitamin C which is also one of the strong antioxidants. One of the roles of Vitamin C is that it plays a part in the making of the body’s connective tissues. Vitamin C also keeps these tissues safe from any harm. Moreover, this vitamin helps our immune system in fighting off bacteria, viruses, and tumor cells. Because Vitamin C is soluble in water, it can discard aqueous peroxide radicals. Thus, it prevents aqueous peroxide from causing harm to lipids in our body. In addition, Vitamin C is also rich in electrons. Therefore, it is able to donate some of its electrons to hydroxyl and superoxide radicals in order to prevent oxidation.

Nuts

Nuts, such as almonds, hazelnut, peanuts, are a good source of Vitamin E which is another powerful antioxidant. It is soluble in fat. Vitamin E functions as an inhibitor to the production of free radicals that can cause damaging chain reactions. As a result, it prevents the growth of cardiac and chronic diseases.

Rice, wheat, and corn

These are a fantastic source of a strong antioxidant, Selenium. Selenium plays a role in producing glutathione which is a natural antioxidant found in our body. It functions along Vitamin E to nullify free radicals that can damage the cell membrane. Also, it can detoxify compounds in the liver that can be harmful to our health. The selenium supplements provide glutathione in our body that also has a job in the enzymatic defense system. The glutathione neutralizes hydrogen peroxide free radical in water, thus preventing oxidation.

Carrots

Carrots contain beta carotene, a strong antioxidant needed by our body. It comes with the ability to destroy dangerous free radicals present in our body. As a result, it prevents the development of cancerous cells and cardiac diseases in humans.

Green, leafy vegetables

These types of vegetables, such as spinach, contain lutein. Lutein is a good antioxidant that contributes to fighting off free radicals. It keeps us safe against LPS induced uveitis. Thus, it plays a major role in protecting eye vision, and the health of eyes by protecting the eye from oxidative stress. So, the intake of lutein supplements reduces the chances of eye diseases.
