Best Foods for Lower Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a substance that can build up in your blood stream and cause you tremendous amounts of problems. Your liver makes some of it, but you also get it from foods too. Although some cholesterol is necessary in your diet, if you have too much of it then you’re doing more harm than good.

If your cholesterol levels get too high, you can end up with heart disease. And, if your blood supply is cut off, you risk a heart attack. What can you do to lower the chances that either of these happens to you? Eat a diet high in foods that help lower your cholesterol.

These foods include:

Oatmeal.

The fibre that is in oatmeal works to lower your “bad” cholesterol, or your LDL (low-density lipoproteins). Steel-cut oatmeal is the best, but you can also consume cereal made with oat bran for similar results. Mix in some fruit, like blueberries or bananas, and you’ll be taking in even more fibre for a better result.

Fish.

When you eat at least two servings weekly of fish that is high in Omega 3 fatty acids, it helps to lower your blood pressure and risk of clots. The best kinds to consume are salmon, tuna and halibut, just to name a few. Of course, you can also take fish oil supplements to achieve similar effects.

Nuts.

High in fibre and fat that is actually good for you, nuts such as walnuts and almonds can actually lower your blood cholesterol if eaten regularly. The key is to consume no more than a handful a day and to choose plain options as opposed to those covered in salt or sugar.

Olive Oil.

This one oil is good for you as it lowers your “bad” cholesterol and raises your “good”. It’s also loaded with antioxidants which are healthy for your body. Aim for two tablespoons a day for maximum circulatory health.

Eat foods like these and you’ll lower your risk of cholesterol related problems. Your body will thank you.
