You’ve heard about ginkgo and have probably seen it in the supplement aisle, but do you know exactly what it does that benefits you? Most importantly, is it something you should be taking?
What does Ginkgo Biloba do?
Ginkgo biloba is actually a species of tree that has been around for hundreds of ages. If you dry its leaves, you’re left with a ginkgo biloba extract that is said to work wonders for your body and mind. Several research studies have shown that not only do the flavonoids in this extract improve circulation, but the terpenoids in it enhance memory, which makes it very important for those concerned with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
The University of Maryland Medical Center also points out the fact that additional studies have linked this one herb to improvements with glaucoma, macular degeneration and tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. So, ginkgo biloba is thought to have many positive responses when taken responsibly.
How much do you need?
The recommended dose is 120-240 milligrams per day. It is also suggested that you don’t take them all at once, but rather divide them into 2-3 doses to be ingested throughout the day.
Be aware that it takes some time for ginkgo to begin to work. In fact, it may take more than a month for you to start feeling the positive effects that other users have reportedly experienced when adding this supplement to their daily regimen.
Are there any reasons NOT to take it?
You should always get your doctor’s approval before taking any sort of supplement, natural or not as certain ones may interact negatively with certain conditions or medications. For instance, if you’re currently on seizure medications or have a prescription for antidepressants, you shouldn’t take ginkgo as it can either magnify the power of the medication or render it ineffective.
If you’re already using ginkgo, you’re going to want to quit taking it at least two days before any sort of surgery as it may increase your risk of bleeding. And, don’t take it all if you’re pregnant or breast feeding.
Take this supplement responsibly and you may be increasing your health and wellness all the way around.
