Digestion of nutrients in the body

Carbs – Saliva starts the breakdown of the food particles in the mouth, small amount of work in the stomach which helps speed the process up in the small intestine. This process takes less than an hour.

Fat – breakdown starts in the small intestine, bile is released from the gallbladder into the intestine enzymes finished the digestion process in the small intestine and pancreas. This process takes 4-6 hours.

Protein – Begins the breakdown in the stomach with pepsin enzymes, finishes in the small intestine. This process takes 3-4 hours.

This is one of the reasons athletes load with carbs before a sports event, its the quickest energy release foods with the lowest amount of fat.
