It is based on scientific research, evidence-based practices, and a reductionist approach, which focuses on identifying and treating specific symptoms or diseases. Western medicine typically relies on pharmaceutical drugs, surgery, and other interventions to treat or manage health conditions. It emphasizes the use of standardized protocols and follows a hierarchical approach with specialized medical professionals, such as doctors and specialists, delivering care.

On the other hand, alternative medicine, also referred to as complementary or integrative medicine, encompasses a broad range of healing practices, systems, and therapies that are outside the scope of conventional medicine. Alternative medicine treatments includes traditional healing systems like Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, naturopathy, homeopathy, and various mind-body practices like yoga, meditation, and acupuncture. It takes a holistic approach to health, emphasizing the interplay of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual factors.

Half the world's population uses a form or other of alternative medical systems annually which is typically available outside of the Government-funded healthcare system paying directly. Some medical practitioners include treatments outside traditional medicine within their practices.
