Should You Add Carbs to Your Protein Powder?

 

Most health experts recommend that you increase your protein intake if you want to help your muscles grow and assist them with effectively recovering from grueling workouts. One rather simple way to do this is via protein powders or shakes. But are you aware that adding carbs to the mix is a great way to enhance your performance, as well as your health?

 

The Protein/Carb Advantage

When you consume a mixture of proteins and carbs together, your body benefits greatly. Your stomach stays satisfied for longer periods of time and your energy levels remain more constant via the slow and continual release of the carbohydrates. Additionally, you’ll suffer from fewer blood glucose issues, allowing you to fall victim to fewer cravings so that it is easier to choose healthy, good for you foods.

So, how can you add carbs to your protein powder in a way that brings you the best results yet tastes good at the same time? It’s all about balance of the ingredients.

First, start with a quality protein powder that is low in sugar and cholesterol. Preferably, you’ll want to choose one that contains natural proteins as well as all of the amino acids your body requires. If you want to increase the protein even more, you can also add nuts or peanut butter to your mix.

Next, you’ll want to choose a carbohydrate that is high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, as well as in taste. Some great options that go well with either chocolate or vanilla powders are bananas, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. You can even add a little bit of oatmeal if you desire a different texture.

Blend these ingredients with milk, low-fat yogurt, or even water and add a little ice and now you’ve got a protein/carb mixture that is tasty, nutritious, and healthy. See what combinations you can come up with that are as satisfying to your taste buds as they are to your body!
