What is Suspension Training

Want to get in touch with your inner acrobat and develop your fitness level at the same time? Have you ever watched the Olympians work the rings with precision and grace, wishing you could do the same? Well, now you can.

Suspension training is a form of strength training that uses your body as resistance against gravity as you conduct a series of exercises using ropes and straps suspended from the ceiling and wall. The original system, called TRX Suspension Training, was developed by former Military Seal Randy Hetrick to give your body a workout good enough for the nation’s greatest warriors.

Benefits of Suspension Training

One of the key benefits of using this type of training is its ability to develop your core muscles. Think about when you were a kid and played on the monkey bars. Even though you used your arms and legs to swing, you could feel your abdominal muscles working to keep you stabilized. This training operates under the same principle, keeping your midsection lean and strong.

A secondary advantage is that suspension training provides stability to your muscles and joints, which lowers your injury risk.

After all, if you get hurt while trying to get healthy, it kind of defeats the purpose, right? Third, it increases your balance and flexibility due to the large range of movement and the fact that you’re responsible for your form while you conduct the exercise, as opposed to a machine doing it for you. Finally, you control the amount of resistance. So, whether you’re a beginner to exercise and want a light workout or have been working out for years and want to challenge your muscles, you can change the level of intensity simply by changing your body position.

Several workout facilities offer suspension classes, or you can purchase your own equipment and build your rock hard body in the comfort of your own home. Either way, this military inspired training is sure to take your fitness to a whole new level.
