You’ve heard that it’s extremely important to keep your cardiovascular system running strong, but what exactly is it? And, why is it so necessary to a healthy body?
The Cardiovascular System Defined
The cardiovascular system is all of the organs and different body tissues that are responsible for circulating the blood through your body. This includes the heart, veins and arteries.
When the heart pumps, it pushes the blood out to your arteries to supply your cells the necessary oxygen they need and remove the harmful carbon dioxide. It also takes the vitamins and nutrients from the foods we eat and distribute them throughout our body so we can enjoy maximum health and longevity.
The blood that has all the cellular toxins and wastes is brought back via the veins and re-oxygenated in the lungs prior to being circulated through the body again. That’s why it’s so important to keep your arteries clear and blood pumping nice and strong.
Cardiovascular System Complications
If you don’t take care of your cardiovascular system, you run the risk of developing conditions such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, heart failure and more. According to WebMD, “cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S.”
Since your body cannot function without your heart, it’s imperative to protect this muscle, and the entire system, so that you can enjoy retirement, grandchildren and all the benefits that come with aging.
How to Keep Your Cardiovascular System Healthy
One of the best ways to keep your cardiovascular system healthy is through regular aerobic exercise. Your goal is to get your heart pumping and maximum oxygen to your muscles and other organs, keeping your cells healthy and strong.
Some great cardiovascular options include:
- Running, jogging or walking
- Cycling
- Swimming
- Kickboxing
- Dancing
- Team sports such as basketball, football and soccer
- Individual sports such as racquetball and tennis
It doesn’t matter which activity you choose as long as you do something. Keep your heart happy and healthy and it will keep you alive.
